The Dance Macabre of the Feminine Devine

I recently received a request for a hand painted binding with an original artwork that immediately awoke my creativity. Its theme and symbolism resonate deeply with me - the metamorphosis of a woman, a medieval Dance Macabre unfolding on the scene of life, inspired by the work of Leonor Fini and seen through my own contemporary lenses.

The preliminary sketch

The final design binding

The binding is an ode to the transformative power of the feminine spirit, that does not look at the notion of death as a finality, but as the playground for the beautiful journey we are walking. It reimagines our material being, our skeletal form not as a symbol of decay, but as a sacred architecture, as the enduring foundation upon which beauty is constantly present and reinvented at all life stages, in all its magnificent forms.

Across four gothic arches, the evolution of a soul is unfolding. The first figure, a delicate bud wreathed in gold-leaf vines, represents the grace of beginnings and the fragile beauty of a rose. The second and third figures adorned by heavy and elaborate costumes, mark our human earthy desires, of man and woman craving for lust, pleasure, richness, marriage, royalty, the multitude of roles we play and inhabit throughout a lifetime. The last figure, the harvest, crowned with a wide hat of mushrooms, represents the ultimate transformation, where the self decays, returns to the earth and eventually becomes a source of new life.

A video of how this binding came into being can be seen on my Instagram page. I hope you will enjoy it!
